YMMV / Psych S 05 E 012 Dual Spires

  • Alternate Character Interpretation: Just what were Dual Spires's original ideals? We saw an all-white town, stated to have been founded after World War I - that's where segregation started in full steam.note  And, although Gus suffered no (mentioned or visible) racist incident other than the little girl asking him whether he was Frederick Douglass, a) that was still a very old (19th-century) historical reference instead of something that would come right out of the bat and b) Gus was very fearful being there (right from the Douglass incident, in fact). The latter leads us to the subject of sundown towns, i.e., towns where black people could be by day, but had to leave by a certain hour (usually when the sun went down); if they didn't do so, they could be violently removed (to the point of death). Also, terms like "problem-free" or "trouble-free"note  were often euphemisms for "free of black people". Could it be that their original intentions were less-than-ideal by our standards?
