- Awesome Music: Lots of it. It is worth pointing out that even the normally prog-averse Robert Christgau gave glowing reviews to much of the Mahavishnu Orchestra's output.
- Archive Panic: The past fifty years McLaughlin has collaborated with hundreds of artists and recorded countless albums.
- Face of the Band: For the Mahavishnu Orchestra. Their first album was even credited to The Mahavishnu Orchestra with John McLaughlin.
- First Installment Wins: The first two Mahavishnu Orchestra albums (some fans will also throw in The Lost Trident Sessions, which was recorded slightly thereafter but not released until much later) are their most acclaimed overall and probably McLaughlin's most acclaimed records as bandleader, full stop. They weren't actually McLaughlin's first records in the latter category, however; Extrapolation was released under his name a couple years earlier. When you consider how long his career has lasted, though, that makes them still very nearly a case of this trope.
YMMV / John McLaughlin
