  • Alternative Character Interpretation: Most written analysis of "Sredni Vashtar" accessible online agree that Conradin has a disturbing Lack of Empathy and might be headed towards psychopathy, but at least one commenter has argued that his non-reaction to the death of his cousin is out of a childlike inability to understand death, coupled with a lack of affection between Conradin and Mrs. De Ropp. As the wish is never said aloud, Sredni Vashtar might have taken "make my cousin stop tormenting me" and assumed it to be "kill my cousin so she can never torment me again".
  • Values Dissonance:
    • Anti-Semitism is treated as a joke in stories like "The Unrest-Cure" and "A Touch of Realism" (in the latter, it literally is a joke— a rather obnoxious prank on a blameless Jewish couple, who had been perfectly nice and generous to the people pulling the prank).
    • Several stories (in particular "Hermann the Irascible— A Story of the Great Weep") play up the idea that women's suffrage was just too ridiculous a concept to be taken seriously.
