YMMV / Growing Up

Go To

  • Alternative Character Interpretation: While Richard is canonically bi, some players have seen him as a biromantic asexual because he develops a crush on the protagonist regardless of their gender but feels squeamish at the female summer camp instructor wanting to do "more than just holding hands with or kissing" him.
  • Spiritual Successor: The game can be seen as an American Setting Update to Chinese Parents, which also involves raising a child up until high school graduation, helping them find a love interest, and encouraging them to study for the Achievement Test of Destiny, but set in China. In fact, the creators of the latter gave Vile Monarch the approval to make Growing Up with the same mechanics as it.
  • Sweet Dreams Fuel: The game has some darker moments, but in general invokes childhood nostalgia with its beautiful soundtrack, wonderful art, and relatable stories about growing up in the 90s.
  • The Woobie: Almost every character has their moments but Nathan is the trope personified. Between his depression, family struggles, and bullying, he's definitely in need of a hug.
