- Fandom Rivalry: Season 3 unfortunately wound up butting heads with the Aretha Franklin biopic Respect starring Jennifer Hudson, with the fans' ire being especially raised because Franklin had actually handpicked Hudson as the perfect actress to play her shortly before her death.
- What Do You Mean, It's Not for Kids?: Just because it's a biographical series produced for the National Geographic channel, you might think it is family-friendly, given everything else NG airs tends to be of this nature. That assumption disappeared with the first sex scene involving (of all people) Albert Einstein. The second season, focusing on Pablo Picasso, was more of the same.
