YMMV / Frasier S 02 E 03 The Matchmaker

Go To

  • Fair for Its Day: While the episode milks the Cringe Comedy of the Mistaken for Gay plotline for all its worth - which has led to some modern viewers accusing it of Gay Panic - the episode itself depicts Tom as a perfectly Nice Guy, and his homosexuality is treated very casually by everyone else. Indeed, when Frasier learns about the misunderstanding, rather than freaking out over being perceived as gay, or anything of the sort, he politely explains the situation to Tom, who then leaves on friendly terms. The episode even won a GLAAD media award the following year.
  • Growing the Beard: While the first season of the show was well-crafted and realized, especially compared to the ropey inaugural seasons of contemporary sitcoms like Seinfeld and The Simpsons, this early second season episode is generally agreed to be where the show truly develops its fastball and becomes the delicately crafted, hilarious farce that it would come to be remembered as, and it's still considered one of the show's funniest half-hours.
