YMMV / Franny K. Stein

Go To

  • Applicability: Intentionally or not, the first book's plot, with Franny (a well-meaning and intelligent but peculiar child with pedantic interests who sometimes has trouble reading social cues) trying to blend in and make friends with her peers by observing their behavior and imitating it, is a very familiar experience for many people who aren't neurotypical, such as people on the autism spectrum. Which makes it even more heartwarming when her classmates accept her as a friend exactly as she is, and grow to understand and even like some of Franny's interests. Rather than ignore her differences, they embrace them.
  • Heartwarming in Hindsight: The chapter in the second book Attack of the 50-Ft. Cupid where Franny and Igor work together to repair the damages caused by the 50-Ft. Cupid, restore Franny to normal size and finish the Valentines for Franny's class describes Franny and Igor as working together as if they had known each other for years. The description becomes even more endearing when the later book The Fran With Four Brains goes into detail on how strong the bond between Franny and Igor has grown, especially the illustrations of Franny reading to Igor and Igor tucking Franny into bed while kissing her goodnight.
  • Ugly Cute: Igor, and the cat/clown thing from The Frandidate manage to be a strange mixture of grotesque and adorable.
