- Iron Woobie: Johnny has a terrible life, but he keeps going no matter what. This is represented by his Sandshrew/Sandslash, who represents his resilience and will to carry on.
- Moral Event Horizon:
- Mr. Fangen going after Johnny with a shovel after Johnny catches him cheating on his wife with Erika. Later, he murders his wife in cold blood just for fighting back against him and then blames Johnny for it.
- Blue telling Mr. Fangen where Johnny is. When Johnny says that his dad will kill him, Blue says "I know."
- The Woobie: Johnny. His parents are bad, bullies pick on him, and he's slowly going mad. He has no one to really turn to, and a psychologist recommended he be institutionalized.
