- Cult Classic: Dark Was the Night has a fairly by-the-numbers plot, pretty maligned special effects and came out to a mediocre reception. Nonetheless, the cinematography, some good suspenseful moments, and the acting (particular Kevin Durand Playing Against Type) have given the movie a respectful, steadily growing fanbase.
- Ensemble Dark Horse:
- Donny's peformanceas as a nuanced, competent deputy is considered a highlight of the movie.
- Earl the hunter and bartender, a knowledgeable, Properly Paranoid guy who lends some help to Paul and Donny and is played by a veteran horror actor.
- Woobie Family: The Shields following the loss of their son and the parents marriage struggling.
