- Do Not Do This Cool Thing: While both the book and the film increased awareness of the heroin prostitution problem at the same time several teenagers unfortunately got curious and took up heroin themselves. It doesn't help that some of the book covers and film posters (such as the one on the main page) have a rather attractive and cool young girl striking a rebellious pose.
- Hollywood Pudgy: Christiane is stick-thin (she lists her weight as around 95lbs at one point), because she can't keep anything down. After she goes to visit her grandmother, her jeans (which she's taken in to be as tight as possible) no longer fit and she has a belly bulge.
- Misaimed Fandom: After the film came out, young girls started dressing like the kids in the film and hanging around Zoo Station.
