YMMV / Buffy Sainte-Marie

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Many of her songs, but "Cod'ine" from her first album is a particular stand-out: a visceral, low-down ballad recounting a battle with codeine addiction.
  • Covered Up: Donovan's version of "Universal Soldier", released a year after Buffy's original, was a bigger hit. Buffy didn't mind this, as she was glad he got so many people to hear her words.
  • First Installment Wins: It's My Way is considered to be one of the greatest albums made by an Indigenous American and one of the greatest folk albums, in general.
  • Epic Riff: Particularly on Illuminations, with songs such as Suffer the Little Children and He's a Keeper of the Fire
  • Tear Jerker: Songs like the topical "Now That The Buffalo's Gone" or "My Country 'tis of Thy People You're Dying" are simultaneously damning and forlorn. Showing a sorrow coloured by hope that things may someday change for Indigenous Americans.
  • Vindicated by History: Her sixth record Illuminations didn't get much buzz when when it first came out back in 1969. Now it's generally considered a pioneering electronic record and a forerunner for the New Weird America movement.
