Consider how in ancient Rome, the paterfamilias held absolute power over his wife, his children, and his slaves. In theory at least, he could even kill any one of them with impunity. "Husbands, love your wives," "Fathers, do not provoke your children to anger," and "Masters, respect your slaves" were all revolutionary concepts at the time.
