• Alternative Character Interpretation: It is implied that the albino bat that swooped down and startled Gaz into falling and hitting her head is actually Maddie's spirit. Was she aware that Gaz hitting her head would send her back in time to become a patient of the Asylum? If she was aware of that, did she do it to scare Gaz straight after listening to her call Dib a crazy freak for believing in the paranormal? Or did she do it because she was lonely and wanted someone to talk to, after haunting the ruins of the Asylum for years?
• Nightmare Fuel: The very premise of this story is dripping with existential horror, as Gaz's entire ordeal — dealing with constant Gaslighting and physical abuse (including regular electroshock treatments) by the hospital staff and the other patients — slowly wears down her willpower and eventually leaves her questioning her sanity and sense of reality. And then there's the climax, wherein she's nearly lobotomized by means of an icepick through the eye socket, all while fully conscious but completely immobilized by a paralytic drug and unable to resist in any way.
