- Harsher in Hindsight: "Houston" after the titular city was hit by Hurricane Harvey. The song's opening lines are "If the storm doesn't kill me, the government will./Got to get that out of my head."
- Win Back the Crowd: After the diminishing returns of Up, Reveal, and especially Around the Sun, Accelerate did much to win back audiences who'd been turned off by the band's output without Bill Berry, marking a critical and commercial turnaround and being widely considered the end of R.E.M.'s Audience-Alienating Era in the late '90s and early 2000s.
