They're expected to fight and die in service to Space King. Chestnut being the Sole Survivor and The Medic of the squad is why his version of Space King calls him a "worthless piece of shit" even before the mission goes tits up, no pun intended. The Star Defender's equipment has a psionic component that requires the user to be angry for it to work.
A couple of blink-and-you-miss-it labels refer to their powered armor as "Psycho-Armor" and their guns as "Psycho-Blasters." Now consider that they spend most of their time frothing with rage. Their weapons might work by channeling their "righteous" fury into devastating beams of pure hatred. As for the armor, the angrier they are, the stronger, faster, and more powerful it becomes. Consider that, in the heat of battle, a point-blank plasma gun shot scratched the paint on Captain's codpeice, but when they go up against the weirdly-sexy and thus distracting Alien queen, they get one-shot killed by her tiddy-lazers.
