Elinor Carlsle knows all along that Mary Gerrard is Mrs. Welman's daughter.

Mrs. Welman could well have let something slip, and Elinor could have followed it up. When Mrs. Welman dies intestate, Elinor qutckly finds out (if she doesn't know already) that under the present (1939) law an illegitimate child can inherit from her mother, so that Mary and not Elinor herself is Mrs. Welman's heir; but she says nothing. This is another reason why Elinor might think Mary making a will is funny.
