"Someone Great" is inspired by the experience of having a miscarriage.
Someone close to the singer is no longer there, but it's not the singer's wife, because of the line "You're smaller than my wife imagined." The "you" of the song could refer to both whoever has died and also the singer's wife, if she was pregnant ("To tell the truth I saw it coming / The way you were breathing.") The video adds another layer to this: it depicts a day in the life of a young woman, first in bed with her boyfriend, then going about her business, but the young woman is digitally edited out to look like a featureless black void, as if she had never existed. The video could be about the life the subject of the song might have had, if she had lived.
