YMMV / LCD Soundsystem

Go To

  • Awesome Music: Most stuff, but Sound of Silver and This Is Happening stand out.
  • Broken Base:
    • Due to a feud with fellow Dance-Punk band Death from Above 1979 over their name (Murphy's record label is "DFA Records," which stands for Death from Above, the original name of DFA 1979), some people who are fans of LCD Soundsystem have become detractors of DFA 1979, and vice-versa. People who are fans of both bands, along with some who are fans of only one, found the whole thing stupid and wanted the two to get over it.
      • Murphy explained his side of the story in an interview with Pitchfork. He claimed that the label knew about the band for a while and didn't care that their name was the same. However, once the band signed to Atlantic, Atlantic refused to release their album if the band's name was the same as another entity. Murphy was okay with the name change to Death from Above 1979, but the lawyers weren't. They only backed down when Murphy said he wasn't comfortable if the legal negotiations would delay the band's album.
      • Even more, both bands appeared in the soundtracks of Project Gotham Racing 3 ("Tribulations" for LCD, "Black History Month" for DFA 1979) and Saints Row 2 ("North American Scum" for LCD, "Sexy Results" for DFA 1979).
    • LCD Soundsystem making their 2016 comeback. It was either a "fandom rejoice" moment, and long overdue, or a huge point of contention and James going back on his word. James, always the self-aware type, saw this coming, and talked it out in a blog post that won a few fans back.
  • Epic Riff:
    • The signature slide guitar line in "All I Want" certainly qualifies.
    • The repeated piano line in "All My Friends" does as well.
    • "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House" opens with James's funky "OW! OW!", leading then into a repeated electronic guitar riff. It kicks major ass.
    • "North American Scum". THE INTRO. AND THE CHORUS.
  • Even Better Sequel: Many fans prefer Sound of Silver to the self-titled debut. Many critics do too.
  • Fandom Rivalry: With the fanbase of Death from Above 1979 (see above), although there are fans of both bands.
  • Funny Moments: Much of Murphy's lyrics mock the stereotype of the kids that totally listen to his music. The irony is that they normally know they're being criticized, too, but don't care because the music is so damn catchy.
  • Heartwarming Moments: "Home", the closing track of This is Happening.
  • Misaimed Fandom: Those who only pay attention to the title of "North American Scum" assume it's all self-deprecation or an anti-America song. Turns out it's actually pretty patriotic.
  • Signature Song: A handful, but the most notable amongst them are "Dance Yrself Clean", "All My Friends", "Someone Great" and "Daft Punk Is Playing at My House".
  • Tear Jerker:
    • The farewell show performance of "New York, I Love You, But You're Bringing Me Down".
    • "Someone Great". Especially the video. For context, the song is about the feeling of raw, undigested grief after a titular "someone great" dies - every line hits like a brick with the poignancy of mundane events that have such emotional gravitas behind them now ("The worst is all the lovely weather, surprised it's not raining"), but especially the stanza (mentioned below) where James flatly explains that the act of missing someone doesn't end until you yourself die. If you start associating this track with a lost loved one, it becomes even more visceral in how cutting it is.
"And it keeps coming, and it keeps coming, and it keeps coming, and it keeps coming, and it keeps coming, and it keeps coming, and it keeps coming 'til the day it stops."
