Yuri is still alive

The last we saw of Mikhail's cohort was on Feilong's boat. He shot Takaba and was about to steal the deed for Feilong's casino, when he found himself staring down the barrel of Asami's gun. Asami shot Yuri multiple times, and the force of the blasts sent Yuri over the side of the boat. The implication here is that Yuri died. However, there's also a possibility that he's still alive. For one thing he'd been shot previously by Takaba, but hadn't been seriously injured because of the bullet-proof vest he wore. There was minimal blood from his wounds. When he's shot by Asami there is also minimal blood, whereas Takaba is gushing blood from what is essentially a flesh wound. Feilong's boat is also stationary in the bay, so Yuri wouldn't have been sucked into the propellers. There's a possibility that Yuri landed in the water relatively safely and swam to harbor.

If nothing else, there's also Mikhail's reaction to the proceedings. One might think the mafiya boss would be angry over seeing a cohort be murdered in front of him, even if that cohort screwed up the hostage exchange. Instead, Mikhail looks and is bored. It might be a sign of his twisted personality, but it also might be a sign that he knows Yuri wouldn't have gotten killed so easily.

Just as Feilong and Asami did not fall easily for mortally gunshot wounds, it's highly doubtful that Yuri fell from simply letting his guard down. So it's unlikely this will be the last we see of this twisted, yet deeply closeted gangster.

  • The onsen-omake was used as prood here that Yuri is alive - but that extra is non-canon and the storyline never happened inside the plot of Finder. Evidence for this is given by Sensei herself:
1.) In "Pray in the Abyss" Akihito tells us that he never met Fei Long in person after the Casino Ship, but at the Onsen-Extra Akihito and Asami are living together. This would therefore have happened after the Casino Ship, but can't have happened after the Casino ship.

2.) In "Pray in the Abyss" Mikhail states how he never met Yuri again after the Casino Ship until the moment Yuri kidnaps Fei Long. So IF Yuri is wearing the eye-patch this must have happened after the Casino Ship, but can't have because he would not have been able to visit the onsen together with Mikhail, because they had not met again.

  • But of course: Yuri survived the Casino Ship as we know now.

Asami is the "face" of his organization

There's little to deny that Asami is a gangster, even as he participates in standard business practices. However, unlike one might assume of a yakuza Asami has no tattoos on his body and the public knows him mostly as a businessman and not as a gangster. This is probably because he is the face of the "front" of his organization.

Generally within the structure of any crime organization they have business that happens out in the open and business that happens behind closed doors. One person will oversee the public business that disguises the criminal activity and another will oversee the private business that is the criminal activity. Asami oversees the public business that covers up the criminal activity. As such he has to look as legitimate as possible. For this reason he doesn't have the tattoos that would regularly associate one with the yakuza, because that would give himself away all too easily. So he has to look the part of being a suave, elite businessman and he does so flawlessly. And considering how lucrative each of his multiple businesses are, it's safe to say he's playing his part very well.

So though he's a gangster, Asami is the "face" of his organization that makes it looks professional but most of all legitimate. It would certainly give him the ability to use the power of his gang as he sees fit, whilst still looking like a regular businessman.

  • Asami is clearly not a Yakuza. To be a Yakuza he would have to be part of a Yakuza group which he obviously is not. "Yakuza" is not the japanese term for "criminal". Being a criminal you MIGHT be a Yakuza but you don't have to be.

Takaba is Eurasian

In official colored artwork his eyes are blue. None of the other Asian characters have blue eyes. Mikhail assumes that he can speak English—probably in relation to his blue eyes. More poignantly is his seiyuu Tetsuya Kakihara. Though Japanese he was born and raised in Germany, and speaks Japanese as a second language. It might all be a coincidence, but it might hint that Takaba has mixed heritage.
