The film's title is a spoiler: Pulver isn't human, he's a video game character.

The game's hardware is so advanced the player characters have sentience. Alternatively, the human player takes on the game character's persona through some kind of VR that gives the player the character's memories temporarily. (Or not so temporarily if something goes wrong.)
