Hyper Danganronpa: Blades of Despair is a completed Danganronpa fanfic as well as an upcoming video series adaptation. The first chapter of the fanfic was published August 25th, 2019, and completed on August 28th, 2021. The first episode of the video series was released on April 9th, 2022, with the prologue being complete as of now. The fanfic can be found here, and the series' Youtube channel can be found here. The story follows Orito Asaji, the Ultimate Extreme Luck Student, as she finds herself trapped in the prestigeious Seiko Academy along with fifteen other Ultimate students. Two robotic bears, known as Monoworth and Monomenon, give each student one task to escape the academy: murder, and get away with it. While the students initally disbelieve that anyone would attempt murder, as the game continues, that idea begins to slowly unravel as the academy's secrets become known.

Please note that this contains spoilers for both the original fanfic and the video series, so please read at your own risk.

Hyper Danganronpa: Blades of Despair provides examples of:

  • Anyone Can Die: As is the case for most fanmade death games of this nature.
  • Art Evolution: During the run of the original novelization, artist Kira made basic sprites for each of the cast members. When the video series was being created, however, all of them were redone.
  • Awful Truth: Everyone in the killing game has been raised from birth to participate in it, with every life event being manufactured by the Blades of Despair.
  • Beneath Suspicion: Mitsumi in the fourth trial. He was ruled out almost immediately due to him being Saza's motive target, and if he did kill her, Mitsumi and one other person would have left the building, meaning that Mitsumi did not kill her... at least intentionally.
  • Big Bad: Kinji Ishotaru. He is the leader of the Blades of Despair, and is a clone of the former Kinji Ishotaru who started the killing games a century ago. Every single event that happens in the story can be traced back to him.
  • Cooked to Death: Mitsumi's execution, where he is stripped, tied to a pole, and roasted alive.
  • Face–Heel Turn: Yoneda Naosuke. Up until Chapter 3, he was a kind and generous young man who was helpful to the rest of the cast. However, upon Tokunaga's death, as well as his killer never being revealed in the trial due to only Ouji's death counting, resulted in him being much more hostile (and downright sociopathic) to his classmates.
  • Title Drop: At the end of Part 1, the deciphered message reads: THE BLADES OF DESPAIR HIDE AMONG US. DO NOT PLAY THE GAME. DO NOT KILL YOUR CLASSMATES. THERE IS NO HOPE.
