Cummings being an indie director, he'd expected a "polite no" from a big-name actor, but Forster, who was already being treated for cancer at the time, was attracted to the script for its themes on health and aging.
• Underage Casting: John states that he is 39, but Cummings was 33 during filming, only 16 years older than the age of his character's daughter.
