• In Memoriam: This episode was dedicated to Ron Taylor, the voice of Lisa's saxophone mentor and friend, Bleeding Gums Murphy (whose character died before his actual voice actor did).
• Pop-Culture Urban Legends: Contrary to popular belief, the show didn't lose their sponsorship from Nestlé for the Take That! to Butterfingers. It's actually the other way around, the show did the joke because the contract had already expired.
• Recycled Script: This episode shares some similarities to "Homer Vs. The 18th Amendment"^note namely, a certain food/drink is outlawed from Springfield, leading to Homer, Bart, and several other people trying to smuggle it into the town (while one of the Simpson women protest because the food/drink was outlawed for a reason), and the episode ending with the ban being reversed, only with Lisa and Marge's parts switched around.
