Trivia / The Red Shoes (Album)

Go To

  • Creator Backlash: Bush looked back poorly on the decision to record the album digitally. In the liner notes to 2011's Director's Cut, which includes re-recordings of select songs from The Red Shoes, she described the resulting sound as too "edgy" and stated that she only went through with digital recording because of industry pressure from the Compact Disc, a digital audio format, becoming the dominant format for music in the '90s. Consequently, Director's Cut includes a remaster of the album sourced from an analog backup tape rather than the digital master tape, with this approach carrying over to the 2018 remaster.
  • In Memoriam: The liner notes include a dedication to the memory of Bush's mother, Hannah, who died shortly before the album's release.
  • Promoted Fanboy: Prince was a fan of Bush's work and was eager to collaborate with her after meeting her during the Nude Tour; he ended up providing backing vocals and instrumental overdubs for "Why Should I Love You?"
  • Reality Subtext: Many songs on the album feature themes of loss and longing, influenced by Bush's split with longtime partner Del Palmer, the failing health of her mother, and the deaths of guitarist Andy Murphy and dancer Gary "Bubba" Hurst. In particular, the closing track, "You're the One", is a Break-Up Song with lyrics noticeably influenced by her separation from Palmer.
