- Cast the Expert: Mark Poletti, who played the teen version of Carter, is a former Cirque Du Soleil artist and national traditional weapons champion.

- Ken Quitugua, who plays the film's villain Zhen Fan, also served as the film's action director.
- Yuji Okumoto who was a producer on the film cameos in two scenes as a waiter at a Chinese restaurant, first telling the Three Tigers they have to order something, the second suggesting that he could be the Fourth Tiger and says he knows karate. Doubles as an Actor Allusion as Okumoto played Chozen in The Karate Kid Part II.
- Dyeing for Your Art: At the director's request, Ron Yuan gained sixty-eight pounds to better portray the out-of-shape Hing.
- Throw It In!: Ron Yuan (Hing) and Matthew Page (Carter) improvised their characters' insulting banter at the funeral scene.
- Word of God: According to Bao Tran, part of why Carter holds such a grudge towards the Three Tigers is that as a teenager, he secretly wanted to be friends with the Three Tigers, which made their gung-fu bullying of him all the more hurtful.
- Write What You Know: Director Bao Tran based the story on his own personal experiences with his friends and classmates when he studied martial arts.
