• Real Life Writes the Plot: According to Stine, the book was inspired by him seeing a kid's parents at an airport give an envelope. He imagined that the it had a note reading "We are not your parents" and the story spiraled from there.
• Recycled Script: While not a direct copy, certain elements are similar to How I Got My Shrunken Head. Both have a kid being taken to a far off place where people think he has a thing that he doeesn't think he actually have, but in both cases, they indeed do. And also in both, they befriend a girl who was working for the villain, who is her dad.
