- Creator Backlash: Not on the part of the filmmakers, but on the part of the French Line, which attempted to block the rental of the Île de France from the Japanese scrapyard they had sold it to. They only relented when the MGM agreed not to use the ship's original name when publicizing the film. Afterwards, they forbade anyone purchasing their retired ships for scrap from doing anything but scrapping them.
