• Actor-Inspired Element: The script had Laeta kiss Spartacus as he dies. Dan Feuerriegel however suggested that Agron kiss him on the forehead, feeling it would have more power coming from someone who Spartacus considered a brother.
• What Could Have Been:
  • Dan Feuerriegel recalls the episode being filmed to be about ninety minutes, including more "drama" and character moments, but was edited down to one hour.
  • An action sequence was written where Crassus's forces are tricked into thinking they're attacking Spartacus's camp, but the place has been evacuated, and covered in oil, and would then be set on fire. This is where Lugo was originally planned to die. It was cut both because it delayed the final battle, and also because it was too large a scale for their budget.
  • An early draft had Crassus killing Spartacus with the Chekhov's Skill he learned from Hilarius, but it was later changed to Spartacus deflecting the blow and getting killed in the back by other soldiers to emphasise the Romans as cowardly.
  • Gannicus originally just shouted out Spartacus's name in defiance when he was crucified, but Steven S De Knight felt the scene wasn't impactful enough, so he added in a cameo from Oenomaus.
