- Actor-Inspired Element:
- Polly Draper started using the Yiddish accent of her character Debbie, added the song everyone sings to Danielle, and came up with scene ideas. The glasses, though, were all Emma Seligman's mom's.
- Dianna Agron asked Emma Seligman to write in a few lines where other characters mention that Kim (the "shiksa princess") does have a Jewish dad and converted, as Agron's own mother converted and she also felt some exclusion.
- Actor-Shared Background: Most (although not all, with the lead Danielle being the main exception) of the Jewish characters are played by real Jews.
- Irony as She Is Cast: The Jewish Danielle (Rachel Sennott) is contrasted with the gentile Kim (Dianna Agron), whom the characters call a "shiksa princess". In real life, Agron is Jewish and Sennott is an Irish-Italian who was raised Catholic.
- Write What You Know: Director/screenwriter Emma Seligman, like lead character Danielle, is Jewish and bisexual (who also looks very much like her). It's unknown how much (if any) of the film is based on her own life, but both Danielle's Jewishness and bisexuality are central to the story.
