  • Banned in China: Because the film is a Netflix exclusive outside of the UK, it is currently banned in Russia along with all other Netflix exclusives as of March 2022 due to the country's invasion of Ukraine.
  • Cut Song: For purposes of keeping the runtime at a brisk two hoursnote , several songs were removed during production, including "Pathetic", "Loud", "This Little Girl" and its reprise, "Telly", "I'm So Clever" and the curtain call reprises of "When I Grow Up" and "Naughty", although "When I Grow Up" receives a spot during the first part of the end credits.
  • Deleted Role: Aljaž Škorjanec (of Strictly Come Dancing fame) was set to appear as Rudolpho, Mrs Wormwood's dashing dance partner, but their number was sadly cut for time.
  • Deleted Scene: According to Andrea Riseborough, "Loud" (Mrs Wormwood's number) was fully filmed but not in the final film.
  • Fake Brit: Alisha Weir, an Irish actress, stars as the English Matilda.
  • Sleeper Hit: Despite receiving a limited theatrical run in the United Statesnote , Matilda grossed $30.6 million in the UK.
  • What Could Have Been:
    • Ralph Fiennes was slated to portray Miss Trunchbull, keeping with the musical's tradition of having the character be a Cross-Cast Role.
    • Years ago, Mara Wilson had wondered about having a cameo in a potential film adaptation of the musical.
