• Shrug of God: Ornette stated at one point in his career that he had created a new approach to music, which he called 'harmolodics'. Interviewers asked him for the rest of his life to explain the theory behind harmolodics, and whatever he answered, he always had an uncanny ability to not explain it. Even when one jazz scholar wrote an entire book about his music^note Free Jazz, Harmolodics and Ornette Coleman, by Stephen Rush, which contained a long and in-depth interview with Ornette, trained musicians still find it almost impossible to figure out from the book what harmolodics is supposed to be. The general consensus is that 'Harmolodics' means 'However Ornette played his music.'
