- Broken Base: His early work when he first started playing in New York was this for the entire jazz genre. While some established figures (Leonard Bernstein, Lionel Hampton, and Percy Heath of the Modern Jazz Quartet, to name but three) declared him a genius, Miles Davis called him insane, and Max Roach punched him right in the face after a gig, then turned up outside his hotel room at 4AM screaming "I know you're up there, motherfucker! Come down here and I'll kick your ass!"
- Vindicated by History: In spite of his Broken Base status mentioned above, he has since gone on to be one of the most celebrated jazz musicians of the time.
