Trivia / One Night in Miami...

Go To

  • Approval of God: Aldis Hodge claims to have heard "through the grapevine" that Jim Brown, the only one of the four men depicted in the film who was still alive when it was released, approved of Hodge's performance of him.
  • Award Category Fraud: The vast majority of the movie is focused on the four main icons. Given they're all fairly equal in terms of prominence, this begged the question of whether or not they should all be submitted for leading or supporting awards. In the end it was decided that Kingsley Ben-Adir and Eli Goree would compete in lead while Aldis Hodge and Leslie Odom Jr. would compete in supporting. Several pundits noted that the main ensemble should've all been grouped into the same category instead, and the Golden Globes made the decision that all four were to be eligible in supporting at that ceremony. A few also questioned Goree going lead but not Odom, given the conflict between the latter and Ben-Adir is the movie's biggest source of conflict.
  • The Cast Showoff: Tony and Grammy winner Leslie Odom Jr. puts his singing voice to use many times. This makes sense given he's playing Sam Cooke.
  • Fake American: The British Kingsley Ben-Adir plays Malcolm X and the Canadian Eli Gore plays Cassius Clay.
  • Real-Life Relative: Leslie Odom Jr. (Sam Cooke)'s real life wife Nicolette Robinson plays Barbara Cooke.
  • Write What You Know: The conflict between Sam and Malcom over the role of activism in art was inspired by Kemp Powers' personal experiences as the only Black writer for Star Trek: Discovery and his conflicting feelings about inserting aspects of his life into the show.
