  • Motherload benefited from Science Marches On. At the time of the game's release, it was thought that Mars is geologically inactive and marsquakes either don't exist or is exceedingly rare. In-game, marsquakes (like earthquakes, but on Mars) happen frequently, forcing you to dig new tunnels. In real life, by the late 2010s, there are more observations of marsquakes.
  • The game predates most detection of Martian methane.
