Trivia / Mga Bilanggong Birhen

Go To

  • California Doubling: The film is set in the Visayan province, but filmed in Pampanga, a province in Central Luzon.
  • Descended Creator: Armida Siguion-Reyna stars as Felipa Sagrada while serving as the film's producer.
  • Hostility on the Set: Lino Brocka did not take kindly with director and friend Mario O'Hara's firing (see Troubled Production), and butted heads with the producer-actress Armida Siguion-Reyna as a result. He demanded she excise all of his scenes from the film, but one had to be kept because removing it would otherwise create a continuity error. Specifically, Brocka, as a bald-headed cultist, whispers to another cultist to kidnap Celina, leading to the ritual scene and her eventual rescue.
  • Playing Against Type: Armida Siguion-Reyna was usually cast as a villain opposite leading ladies in films, but here, she plays the melancholic and disillusioned wife and mother, Felipa Sagrada.
  • Troubled Production: Initially, things went smoothly for the crew, but by the third week, O'Hara (the director) began to make changes to the movie by toning down some of the love scenes and other forms of bowdlerisation which Siguion-Reyna (the producer) disagreed with. O'Hara was ultimately fired when he kept changing schedules without the producer's permission, causing delays, and Romy V. Suzara took over as director where 95% of the film had already been finished. The opening credits explicitly state this with the direction "started" by O'Hara, then "finished" by Suzara.
