And to make things complicated, material from the first TV series was used to make a second movie and material from the first movie was used to make a second TV series.

- Madicken is based on Astrid Lindgren's childhood best friend Anne-Marie "Madicken" Ingeström (1907-1991), the daughter of the local bank manager. Many of the games Madicken and Lisabet play in the books are games that Astrid and Anne-Marie played as children. Astrid and Anne-Marie stayed friends for the rest of their lives.
- Lisabet is based on Astrid Lindgren's own younger sister Stina.
