Red's performer, Karen Prell, came up with the basic pitch (self-described as simply "Red gets hurt a lot") when head writer Jerry Juhl asked if she had any ideas for a story to replace a Wembley-centric episode that had to be postponed after Steve Whitmire broke a bone in his hand, and Jerry took the idea and wrote it into something more character driven.
