• Worthy Opponent: The poem is about the son of a French admiral bravely staying at his post in combat with the British fleet, when the author herself and the people who spread the story she based the poem on are British. Many generations of romantic young Englishmen were then taught to admire the heroic young Casabianca and seek to emulate him.
