  • Reality Subtext: Ever since the conception of the character there have been criticisms by many who feel Robin is too bright and cheerful to compliment Batman’s brooding themes and imagery. The response ever since was to make the character darker and edgier with each successive generation, which led to the criticism that Batman collects traumatized orphans to create child soldiers. In this series, Batman’s subplot revolves around the whole concept of child soldiers, human engineering and traumatic origins—and how that relates to his reasons behind bringing in Robin and his subsequent attempt to change his approach for the better. The main plot has Dick deal with the ramifications of Batman’s decisions, his own influence on the Robin mantle and whether he has achieved anything of note in that regard. It all leads to the question: what makes a Robin?
