• Dummied Out: The society trait "guardians of nature" was an early prototype for pantheon unlocks, but was deemed underwhelming (it gives bonus food to conduits and +1 recruit rank for animal units) and discarded. Despite being inaccessible to the player it still exists in the system, and random generation for marauder and free city races will sometimes select it.
• What Could Have Been:
  • In pre-release videos, Edward Portsmith, a returning protagonist from Age of Wonders III, can be glimpsed as an Industrial Champion with an Older and Wiser design, even being attached to the "Artisan Kings" map trait. However, he was instead held back for the Empire and Ashes expansion, as a Reaver Champion skewing closer to his original design.
  • Goldtouched was originally going to be a major race transformation, and an event from the first story realm still presents it like one, listing it alongside Angelize and Gaia's Chosen. Presumably, it would've given units the 'elemental' tag, in line with other major transformation spells.
