  • Reality Subtext: Reviewers noted that the album's lyrical content coincided with both Thom Yorke's separation from his longtime partner, Rachael Owen, and the US presidential campaign of Donald Trump, who would be elected president later that year. While Yorke was evasive about the influence of his separation from Owen, he implied in a BBC Radio 6 interview that the Trump allusions were intentional, summarizing "The Numbers" as "One day a time, mate, you will be impeached shortly, mate. You are not a leader, love … You can't sustain this. It's not gonna work. One day a time. We ain't stupid."
  • What Could Have Been: According to Stanley Donwood, the album cover was originally going to use paint splatters produced by a "Paint Dalek" that could automatically and randomly fire paint on a canvas. However, the results were dissatisfactory, motivating Donwood to create the splatters himself and simply leave them outside to be affected by the weather.
