- The entire situation Dave is in. Getting kicked out of the house after coming out,and then getting raped.
- Kurt's visit with Dave in the hospital ending with the song "Mad World."
- "Parents are supposed to love their kids."
- The presentation at the assembly. That guy's story is tragic!
- Carol and Dave's discussion in Chapter 19. The story says it perfectly: "He wipes at his face, and he doesn't know if his tears are for Carole or Dave or both of them, or if he's just tearing up because the world is so awful that this kind of thing happens often."
- The nightmare scene. Dave is scared, and Kurt wants to comfort him, but he can't.
