Who would know that a movie about a girl and her robot friend could be so sad?
- Poor Mai, when she was just a baby her father abandoned her after arguing with her mother and is implied he died shortly after. To cope with the lose, her mother started to take care more of the robots IQ Robotics made rather than her own daughter and was severely neglected for her whole life. When she grew up and went to school, the soccer team constantly bullied her both physically and mentally. No wonder why she is so mean.
- 7723’s relationship with Mai is clearly a abusive one. Mai makes 7723 do things he normally wouldn’t do such as destroying stuff and innocent robots. It gets worse when Mai makes him kill Greenwood, who is in tears and begging to not hurt her. 7723 refuses to listen to Mai and confronts her, something that makes Mai incredibly angry. This is very similar to a lot of abusive relationships in real life.
- Near the end of the movie, 7723 is forced to perform a full-system reset while fighting Ares, erasing his memories and ultimately forgetting who Mai is. The song that plays doesn't help
