Larry's town is full of stray dogs that are left over from previous dog-to-children experiments. After Lily becomes a dog, her parents abandon their former daughter with the others and pretend she never existed. After Larry transforms, his parents, feeling remorse, stay behind to take care of him. This means that out of all the parents in town, they were the only ones who truly loved their assigned "child".
