The catalyst for the story: Jeff finding out his son died in a car crash. This makes his entire trauma in dealing with his death all the harsher on him when you also realize he has lived in a childlike box of innocence for decades.
Seb is lying in bed holding a dress that his ex-wife bought that Deirdre used part of to make her first puppet.
Jeff's ailing lover, Vivian, breaks up with him, on Thanksgiving, in front of his entire family and his Japanese counterpart, because her second-line chemotherapy treatments (which he encouraged her to go through with) pushed her into remission, and she states that now that she's going to live, and can plan ahead, she can't involve him in those plans. It's metered a bit by Jeff's entire family, including Will and Maddy, screaming "fuck you" at Vivian as she flees the room.
