- Gura's tutorial episode: Scout starts the episode with an idyllic life and a respected family in a tight-knit rural community. By the end of the episode, her family has fallen apart and her life has been as good as destroyed. First she learns that her family's success in mining and smithing, thus their entire livelihood and reputation, is built on decades of serial sacrificial murder, and her parents have been preying on the town's elderly for years by inviting them into their home under the pretense of taking care of them. Then she finds out her parents have skipped town to evade the authorities, leaving her and her sister to fend for themselves. Despite barely being an adult herself, Scout now has to take on a parental role and figure out how to support both herself and her sister. At this point, even if her parents come back someday, they'll never be a family again. It's no surprise that in episode 6, Scout's exchange with her parents is considerably less warm than everyone else's.
- Scout: Do you have any idea what you've done to this family?! You left me – you left me and you left Sister all alone, just so you could go off and do – what? What, exactly?
- Episode 6:
- Watoto begs his parents to either leave The Dark Side or let him join them, so he can protect them and they can be together. His parents feel duty-bound to turn down both options, and it's clear they're just as heartbroken as he is that they have to part ways again.
- When Patoto suggests that Watoto steal all the money in the safe for the family to use, Watoto reminds them that they only steal from the government, not from the people. Matoto collapses to the floor sobbing and weeping, momentarily contrite over how they've compromised their principles.
