Tear Jerker / Fellow Travelers

• At the beginning of their sexual relationship, Hawk reacts with annoyance when Tim wants to get to know him better.
  Tim: It's normal to want to know something about the person you—
  Hawk: Fuck. The person you fuck.
• Later in the pilot, Tim asks Hawk if he's going to marry Lucy Smith. Hawk angrily reminds Tim that his relationship with Hawk can never be anything more than casual, and is extremely dismissive when Tim tearfully confronts him about his inconsiderate and withholding behavior.
  Hawk: Here comes the sermon. You let me know when I should genuflect.
• At church, Tim confesses to a priest that he had carnal relations, and not with a woman. The priest responds that God will forgive Tim if he's truly sorry. Through tears, Tim admits that he's not sorry.
  Tim: When I committed this sin, I felt pure. More pure than I felt in my entire life. So how can I be sorry for it?
• In episode 5, Tim is already at an emotional low point, after quitting his job and questioning his relationship with God. Then Hawk tells Tim that he is going to ask Lucy to marry him. Tim joins the army, determined not to become Hawk's gender-inverted mistress. On their last night together in D.C., Tim asks Hawk to "promise you won't write."
• Lucy's progression from a warm, open-hearted young woman to a much colder and more methodical wife who is used to suppressing her own feelings and emotional pain after decades of neglect and infidelity from Hawk.
• Hawk and Tim's final goodbye. Tim lets Hawk know that he has no regrets about their relationship, and Hawk kisses him in public for the first and last time.
  Tim: I spent most of my life waiting for God to love me. And then I realized the only thing that matters is I love God. It's the same with you. I have loved you my whole life. I've never loved anyone but you. You were my great, consuming love. And most people don't get one of those. I did. I have no regrets.
  (Hawk kisses him.)
