The movie begins with a close-up shot of tears streaming down a young girl's face (Amy), which serves as Foreshadowing to the ending. Made all the more heart-wrenching by the fact that is just comes out of nowhere.
Amy's mother. Her family practices polygyny, in which a man marries other women while in a marriage with his original wife. Her mother doesn't want to go through with it, but she has no choice as refusing to attend the wedding goes against her tradition. She's clearly heard sobbing and speaking with a distraught tone while on the phone. To make matters worse, Amy herself has to overhear the conversation while hiding under the bed (she did it to avoid being caught wearing her little brother's t-shirt in a suggestive manner), bringing tears to her own face and fueling a hatred of her father.
Amy being bullied by the Cuties. Her home life is already troubled enough, and she has to go to school with a bruise on her forehead which the staff does nothing about. During her confrontation with the group, she lacks the courage to stand up to them, demonstrated through her weak voice tone and overly nice attempts to strike a friendship with them.
The ending. Before the dance contest even ends, a sudden drop of wedding confetti that was stuck in Amy's hair immediately triggers memories of her mother, causing her to abandon her performance in the dance and run home to her struggling mother. The up-close shot of her crying that was shown at the beginning of the movie is recycled during this scene. It is at this moment that she seems to have experienced a Heel–Face Turn and realized that she didn't need to go against her family's traditions in the name of an even worse, inappropriate culture.
