Tear Jerker / Alice Series

• Lovingly Alice has the death of her kitten, Oatmeal. Even with the hints that something was up with her, Alice's denial about it and her reaction to finding Oatmeal are absolutely heartwrenching.
• Mrs Plotkin's death in The Grooming Of Alice, including the funeral. Also contains a small heartwarming moment, when Alice says what an effect Mrs Plotkin had on her life and how important she was to her.
• Alice Alone is overall a pretty depressing book, because the big event of the book is Alice and Patrick breaking up. The insecurity she begins to feel when Patrick seems to start paying special attention to Penny and the painful break up are very good at stirring the reader's emotions. The revelation that Elizabeth had been molested by a family friend as a young child also counts as an in-universe one.
• Incredibly Alice has the Wham Chapter of Mark Stedtmeister's death. The following chapter, containing the funeral, is bad enough. And then you have Alice falling into a metaphorical hole and having difficulty asking her friends for help when she's in emotional need.
• Now I Tell You Everything has several, as it spans several decades of Alice's life.
  • Over the course of the book, several characters die. Aunt Sally, Uncle Milt and Alice's father are the three biggest ones.
  • Once again, Alice and Patrick breaking up, this time because of the idea of a long-distance relationship not working. This makes their meeting up and getting back together at the airport a few years later all the more of a heartwarming and happy tearjerker.
