Fade-Out Recap

The screen fades out or cuts forward when one character learns information the viewers already know.

One or more characters need to be caught up on information regarding their quest, but if this is stuff that has already been established, then how should the characters learn this without insulting the audience's attention span or wasting time?

Just do a dissolve or a fade-to-black and start right up again after the characters finish explaining, letting the story continue on with little to no roadblocks.

Examples

Animated Films
  • In Hercules, when the titular character's adoptive parents finally feel ready to tell him that he's adopted, it goes from them telling him that they have something to tell him to him questioning what his actual origins are.

Video Games

  • Master Detective Archives: Rain Code has a lot of things that gets explained to the main character Yuma Kokohead in chapter 0. When a new character encounters these things, the scene will start fast-forwarding and fade to black as Yuma explains to them how everything works.
